Bharat Ratna Award Winners: Established on 2 January 1954, Bharat Ratna is the highest civilian award of the Republic of India. The award is conferred in recognizance of “exceptional service/performance of the highest order” without contrast of race, occupation, status or gender. Bharat Ratna award was originally delimited to achievements in the arts, literature, science and public services, but the government expanded the criteria in December 2011 to include “any field of human endeavour”.
