Ruchira Kamboj was appointed as New Ambassador to the UN in New York.
Ruchira Kamboj (Senior Diplomat) is Bhutan Indian Ambassador, has been currently appointed as Permanent Representative to the UN at New York. Kamboj will succeed TS Tirumurti as the Indian Ambassador to the United Nation.
Ministry of External Affairs states that presently Kamboj is an Ambassador of India to Bhutan and has now been appointed as permanent representative to UN. She is expected to take up the assignment shortly.
She is from Indian Foreign Service and 1987 Civil Service batch. She was the All India Women’s topper and the topper of 1987 Foreign Service batch. She began her diplomatic journey in Paris where she was posted as Third Secretary in the Indian Embassy to France, dealing with Italy, Spain and Portugal during 1991-1996. She is handling the Commonwealth Relationship with them.
She served as First Secretary in Mauritius during 1996-1999 and Head of Chancery at the Indian High Commission in Port Louis. After returning from Delhi, she posted as Deputy Secretary and than Director in charge of Foreign Service Personnel from June 1999 to March 2002 in Ministry of External Affairs. That is one the longest serving tenures in administrative post at Ministry.
She has served as chief of protocol in the Ministry of External Affairs during 2011-2014. She is the first lady who holds this position for outgoing visits by the prime minister, external affairs, president, and vice president.
She served as Deputy Head of the Secretary General Office at the Commonwealth Secretariat in London.
She is married to businessman Diwakar Kamboj and has one daughter. Her late father was an Indian Army Officer and her mother is a retired professor-writer of Sanskrit subject from Delhi University.
